periodontic services

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease and other conditions that affect the supporting structures of your teeth, including the gums, bones, and ligaments. Common periodontal issues include gingivitis (early gum disease) and periodontitis (advanced gum disease), which can lead to tooth loss if untreated. If you're experiencing signs of gum disease like bleeding gums or bad breath, our periodontal services can help you achieve better oral health and improve your overall well-being.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and bone. It is caused by the accumulation of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—on the teeth and gums. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems. The first step in addressing periodontal disease is a scaling and root planing treatment performed by your hygienist.

There are two main stages of periodontal disease:

  • Gingivitis: The early stage of gum disease, characterized by inflammation of the gums. It often causes symptoms like red, swollen, and bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing. Gingivitis is usually reversible with good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings.
  • Periodontitis: If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the infection spreads to the bone and tissues that support the teeth. This can lead to the formation of pockets between the teeth and gums, where bacteria thrive, causing further damage to the bone and soft tissue. Symptoms of periodontitis include gum recession, loose teeth, and persistent bad breath.

Risk factors for periodontal disease include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, genetics, and certain medications. Regular dental checkups and cleanings, along with proper brushing and flossing, are key to preventing and managing periodontal disease.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure performed by a dental hygienist to treat periodontal disease. It is typically recommended when a patient has gum disease beyond the early stage of gingivitis and helps prevent further progression of the disease.

What is Scaling?

Scaling involves the removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of the teeth, especially below the gum line. Tartar builds up over time and can cause gum inflammation and infection. Scaling is done using specialized instruments, either manually or with ultrasonic devices, to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums.

What is Root Planing?

Root planing is the process of smoothing the surfaces of the roots of the teeth to remove any remaining bacteria, tartar, and debris. It helps the gums reattach to the teeth and prevents future plaque buildup in the areas that are harder to reach during regular cleanings.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

  • Prevents Further Gum Disease: By thoroughly cleaning the teeth and roots, scaling and root planing help eliminate bacteria that contribute to gum disease, preventing it from worsening and reducing the risk of tooth loss.
  • Reduces Gum Inflammation: The procedure helps reduce gum swelling, redness, and bleeding, improving the overall health of the gums.
  • Promotes Gum Reattachment: Root planing helps the gums reattach to the teeth, reducing the formation of deep pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria can thrive.
  • Improves Oral Health: By removing plaque and tartar buildup, scaling and root planing help create a cleaner, healthier oral environment, improving overall oral hygiene.
  • Prevents Tooth Loss: By treating periodontal disease early and thoroughly, scaling and root planing can help prevent damage to the bone and tissue supporting the teeth, reducing the likelihood of tooth mobility and loss.
  • Freshens Breath: Since scaling and root planing remove the bacteria and debris that can cause bad breath, it often leads to improved breath quality.

Scaling and root planing is an important procedure to stop the progression of gum disease and maintain long-term oral health, especially when regular cleanings and at-home care aren’t enough to prevent buildup below the gum line. Our team will ensure you receive precise and comfortable care through the use of anesthetics.

Post-procedure Care

  • Follow-up Appointments: Scaling and root planing is often part of a larger periodontal treatment plan. It’s important to attend follow-up appointments and cleanings every 3-4 months to monitor the health of your gums and prevent future issues.
  • Specialized Home Care Regime: The hygienist will provide instructions for home care, such as more frequent brushing, flossing, and rinsing.

Advanced periodontal disease may require a referral to a Periodontist.

Summary

A treatment such as scaling and root planing is commonly used to restore gum health and prevent further damage. Maintaining good oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist are essential for preventing periodontal disease and keeping your smile healthy.
